Project title Care for our Coast programme
Description The aim of this project is to encourage communities to care for their local beach, estuary, lake or river through the promotion of a school-based “Care for our Coast” educational resource. The Trust has piloted this scheme with the Spirit of Adventure Trust and various schools. All clean up participants are encouraged to enter data on an interactive website. This data will then be used to further promote sustainable water management.

Description In response to increasing demand the aim of this project is to expand the Trees for Survival (TFS) programme which involves children growing trees on 'at risk' land.  A national administration of two part time personnel will be employed to facilitate the management of this expansion into a minumum of five additional regions.

Project title Empowering Coastal Communities to Adapt to Climate Change
Description This project aims to provide local coastal communities with an adaptive approach to help mitigate the effects of sea level rise and increased storm activity. The emphasis is on working with these communities to provide them with the skills to assess the state of their beach and dune systems and to understand the implications of climate change.

Project title Green Footprint Project
Description This project will extend the existing successful Green Footprint project into four other New Zealand locations.  The existing project is a Canterbury based native forest re-vegetation project, undertaken in partnership with Landcare Research, Selwyn District Council and Waihora Ellesmere Trust. The project offers travellers the opportunity to purchase a native tree or shrub to help offset the environmental impact of their visit.

Project title Generated Phosphine as a Methyl Bromide Replacement
Description This project aims to demonstrate that Generated Phosphine (developed in Chile) is a safe, viable alternative to methyl bromide for removing quarantine pests on key exports. The project will support running of semi-commercial scale trials on key export crops including logs, sawn timber, apples and onions.

Project title Sustainable Energy Advice Centre Network Pilot - Stage 2
Description This project will build on the work carried out in establishing a Sustainable Energy Advice Centre (SEAC) in Wellington.  Two further advice centres will be established in the upper North and South Island.  Energy advice products and services (e.g. telephone advice, web advice, home visits) will be developed and further staff training carried out.

Project title eDay 2008
Description eDay is a practical community response to raise public awareness of the environmental risks of dumping electronic waste (e-waste) in landfills. eDay also builds local capacity and develop skills in handling e-waste. This year 26 communities have expressed an interesting in participating in eDay, to be held on 4 October  2008. All this equipment will be sent to approved recyclers where over 95% of the materials can be recovered and re-used.

Project title Paper4trees South Island
Description The aim of this project is to expand the successful ‘paper4trees’ project into the schools in the South Island. Schools will be visited and asked to join the project and be rewarded for recycling paper and cardboard with native trees if they join up. To date in the North Island there has been a 95% uptake from schools visited.

Project title Far North Sustainable Living Activation Programme
Description The aim of this project is to encourage householders in the Far North to participate in a sustainability programme.  An initial face to face in-house sustainability appraisal will ascertain the households current ecological footprint, covering areas of energy, waste, water, transport, and building. Practical short and long-term sustainability opportunities are then recommended. Each participating household receives a tailored Sustainable Living Activation Pack.

Project title Community Bus Service
Description The aim of this project is to trial the establishment of an affordable community bus service run on waste vegetable oil. This bus service will reduce emissions by reducing the number of single occupant car journeys. It will also establish a district wide collection system for both commercial and domestic waste vegetable oil and raise awareness of the environmental damage done by irresponsible disposal of oil.

Description The aim of this project is to restore the Waipao river through environmental education and communication therefore encouraging maximum community participation.  Having established a native plant nursery at the local marae, 10,000 plants per year will be available for restoration planting involving co-ordination with the local community and regional council to encourage a collaborative approach.

Description This "Tread Lightly"  programme will be a mobile fully interactive practical educational experience (including displays and activities) for school children. The programme will supplement the existing environmental education that occurs in schools (Enviroschools).  The programme will travel around Auckland initially and subsequently throughout New Zealand demonstrating what households can do  to reduce their  environmental impacts

The project will identify new and innovative organic waste disposal processes to be adopted to meet the ideals of the sector group

Description The Urban Greenspace Project is a Tauranga Environment Centre initative that has been running since June 2005. The Urban Greenspace Project also aims to strengthen the skill base and knowledge of its volunteers through workshops and courses.

The project targets the farming community and uses “bottom up” participatory approaches to develop information sharing forums and resources on Sustainable Land Management within the Waikato lake catchments.

Project title The Maraetotara River Restoration Project
Description The Maraetotara Tree Trust is undertaking the restoration and protection of approximately 34km of Maraetotara River margin. Problem, non-native trees are removed and strips of between 1 and 10 metres wide are fenced along the river banks.  The Trust replants these areas with native eco-sourced seedlings. Their aim is to establish a green corridor along the full length of the river; providing a home for native plants and wildlife.

Description The purpose and vision of the Whareroa Guardians Community Trust Inc is to undertake the long term restoration of the Whareroa catchment. A part-time coordinator will be employed to organise work programmes and liaise with partners and supporters to carry out planting and restoration work in the area.  The project has involved hundreds of volunteers and many community organisations and businesses. This proposal continues on the success of a previously funded SMF project.
