The Green Ribbon Awards

The Ministry for the Environment runs the Green Ribbon Awards each year. These awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by individuals, organisations and businesses to sustaining, protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment. The Minister announces the winners on World Environment Day (5 June).

National awards

EnergyWise Awards

The EnergyWise Awards showcase organisations, and individuals that have demonstrated innovation and brilliant thinking in energy efficiency or renewable energy projects. For more information visit the EnergyWise website.

Regional councils recognise outstanding contributions to improving our environment with their own environmental awards. Look at your local regional council's website for more information.

International awards

Global 500 Award

The Global 500 Roll of Honour recognises outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment throughout the world. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announces the winners each year to mark World Environment Day. For more information visit the Global 500 website.

UNEP Sasakawa Environment Prize

The Sasakawa Prize is awarded each year by the United Nations Environment Programme to an individual who has made an outstanding global contribution to the management and protection of the environment. For more information visit the Sasakawa Prize website.

Global Environment Leadership Award

The Global Environment Facility presents the Global Environment Leadership Award each year to inspire and encourage efforts to shift the world towards environmentally sustainable development. For more information visit the Global Environment Facility website.
