Resource Management Act: Information for practitioners

Resource Management Act (RMA) practitioners play the vital role of implementing the RMA at the local level. The purpose of this website is to provide support to practitioners and promote best practice by sharing knowledge about all aspects of practice under the RMA. The website will be particularly useful for council staff, consultants, environmental managers and other practitioners involved in resource management practice under the RMA.

Best practice guidance and training

Quality Planning

We work in partnership with local government professional organisations as part of the Quality Planning project to provide you with best practice guidance on planning under the RMA and encourage information sharing.

Practitioner training and development

The Ministry for the Environment provides training for resource management practitioners. View a timetable of upcoming training events and details of training programmes offered.

Making Good Decisions

The Making Good Decisions Programme helps councillors, community board members, and independent commissioners make better decisions under the RMA. View details of the Programme, lists of certificate holders and how to register for the next round of workshops.

Practitioner Shortage

View articles and presentations by NZPI, LGNZ, MFE, and others on the current shortage of RMA practitioners.  More will be added as work in this area progresses.
