Exploring the Built Environment - Visit from a Built Environment Professional

Learning objectives

Students will develop:

  • knowledge and understanding of the wide range of professions that contribute to the development and management of the built environment.

Process

  • Divide students into small groups and assign each group to research a profession that is involved in the built environment. Ask students to design a poster illustrating what their profession does and summarising what you need to do to become an:
    • architect
    • engineer
    • landscape architect
    • land surveyor
    • quantity surveyor
    • builder
    • interior designer
    • urban designer
    • planner
    • developer etc.
  • Invite a built environment professional to visit the class and discuss what their work involves and how they contribute to the built environment.
  • Ask speakers to be prepared to discuss how their efforts relate to improving the built environment. Provide speakers with an outline of talking points to be covered, background information on activities the students have completed in relation to the built environment, and ideas for interaction.
  • Prepare students by asking them to suggest questions that they can ask the speaker. Possible questions include:
    • What is an average day like?
    • What skills does the speaker use in their specialty?
    • Why did the speaker choose their profession?
    • What impact does the speaker have on the built environment and what are their goals?

Resources needed

You will need the following resources:

  • poster size cardboard
  • art materials
  • computer with Internet access.
