Exploring the Built Environment - Your Town/City Now
Learning objectives
Students will develop:
- awareness of the identity of their town/city.
Process
- As a class, brainstorm and create a list on the board of landmarks in towns and cities around the world – for example, the carrot in Ohakune, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Sydney Opera House, and the Sky Tower in Auckland.
- Ask the students to list landmarks in their own city and discuss places they would take a tourist to visit.
- Ask students to produce a pamphlet advertising the tourist attractions in their city. Display the completed pamphlets in the classroom.
- Source publicity materials produced for visitors to your town/city from visitor information centres and distribute these to students. As a class, discuss the image that is being projected about the city and the features of the city that are being publicised, and compare these to the features students identified in their own brochures.
Resources needed
You will need the following resources:
- A4 cardboard for the pamphlet
- art materials such as coloured pencils, felt tip pens, paint
- computer with Internet access.
