Environmental Best Practice Guidelines for the Offshore Petroleum Industry

March 2006, ME718

The Ministry for the Environment and Maritime New Zealand, in conjunction with the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand (PEPANZ), have completed these best practice guidelines to identify, assess and manage environmental impacts associated with petroleum exploration, development and production activities being undertaken in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf beyond the Territorial Sea.

The offshore petroleum industry can use the guidelines as a ‘one–stop shop’ for finding out which of their environmental impacts are regulated or are addressed by voluntary guidelines. The guidelines also provide industry with best practice information on the development of environmental assessments and management plans, as well as on environmental monitoring and staff training.
