Please note that the soil acceptance criteria for Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) are superseded by the soil contaminant standards under the National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health (NES).

The other generic health-based ‘soil acceptance criteria’ used in these guidelines are not derived according to the methodology referenced in the NES. However, while there are no specific soil contaminant standards relating to these contaminants of concern yet, the ‘soil acceptance criteria’ developed in these guidelines are likely to be the most appropriate to select as applicable standard  because they are risk-based and developed for New Zealand circumstances.

For more information on the NES, visit the National Environmental Standard for Assessing and Managing Contaminants in Soil to Protect Human Health web page.
