Waste Strategy

The New Zealand Waste Strategy outlines the Government's strategic direction for waste management and minimisation in New Zealand.

Alot has changed since the 2002 New Zealand Waste Strategy was written:

  • Local government, businesses and the communities have made excellent progress over the last decade on waste management and minimisation.
  • The passing of the Waste Minimisation Act in September 2008 means the government now has a broader range of tools available to promote and achieve waste minimisation.

These changes have made it necessary to update the New Zealand Waste Strategy to reflect the Government’s new priorities for the waste sector. These priorities are reflected by the Strategy’s two goals:

  • Reducing the harmful effects of waste.
  • Improving the efficiency of resource use.

These goals provide the necessary guidance for local government, businesses and communities when planning local or regional waste management and minimisation activities.
