Organics

The organics market, locally and internationally, is becoming increasingly important for New Zealand producers. Organic production in the 2000-2001 year was estimated at $140 million, with an estimated $70 million coming from exports.

The environmental benefits of the organics industry are also significant. This supports our clean green image and enhances tourism opportunities. However standards for certifying organic products have until now been voluntary, leaving the market open to abuse by some producers wishing to take advantage of the growing market.

The Ministry for the Environment is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the organics industry to develop a national minimum standard for organics. This will assure consumers of the authenticity of organic products and help access overseas markets. A minimum standard will make it easier for those wishing to become certified organic producers to decide how best to achieve this.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is leading the development of a national strategy for the organics industry. The strategy will expand the organics industry and improve co-ordination between organics groups to enhance export opportunities.
