Environmental policy statement
An overarching environmental policy statement for the Ministry for the Environment has been agreed in principle by management.
Through our environmental policy statement we will strive to:
- Meet, and where appropriate exceed, the requirements of all relevant environmental legislation and government policies and initiatives.
- Continually improve our operational environmental performance by meeting our targets and goals.
- Use materials efficiently.
- Proactively manage waste and divert recyclables from our waste stream.
- Favour the purchasing of more sustainable goods and services.
- Reduce emissions associated with our activities.
- Use energy efficiently.
- Monitor progress and publish results on our environmental performance through our Annual Report.
- Inform staff about our environmental policy and procedures.
- Demonstrate environmental leadership and encourage other organisations to improve their environmental performance.
- Action what is important to us, as outlined in points 1-10 above, through supporting guidance on procurement and resource use, energy, and waste.

There are supporting environmental policies for Energy and Waste. A Procurement and Resource Use policy is currently being worked on and will be available shortly.
Environmental performance
Our environmental performance since 2002 is reported in our Annual Report.
Our performance for 2001 to 2002 is reported in Towards a Triple Bottom Line - our first attempt at reporting on our impacts on the environment, the economy and society.
